The USA is the world's largest importer of steel, counting Canada, Brazil and Mexico as its top three suppliers, and the incumbent President’s view is that by imposing tariffs, which will be paid by companies bringing the steel into the US, there will be a shift away from foreign imports and a boost in domestic steel production. But is this a realistic outcome, at least in the short-term?

In October 2023, a steel-framed car park at Luton Airport Terminal 2 was devastated by a fire started by a fault in a diesel-powered vehicle on level three. Thankfully, there was no loss of life or serious injury, although several firefighters and a member of the airport staff were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. However, the fire did destroy over one thousand vehicles and caused the collapse of some sections of the upper-level car park floor

In an article published in September of 2024, the CEO of Responsible Steel, Annie Heaton, reminded us that if steel production was the equivalent of a country, we would be the fourth largest emitter of CO2 on the planet. In order to help tackle this astonishing fact, the UK transition from BOF to EAF steelmaking is now well underway and, once completed, will reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions from steel production by around 85%.
