Michelle Welsh MP visited Briton Fabricators in Hucknall, to meet staff and discuss the opportunities and challenges currently facing the UK constructional steelwork sector.
Briton Fabricators, established in 1973, is a privately owned steel fabrication business, which has worked on major infrastructure schemes including the Grantham Southern Relief Road, M6 Junction 19 and the South East Aylesbury Link Road.
During the constituency visit, representatives from Briton Fabricators and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) discussed a number of issues currently affecting the sector, including the proposed steel tariff and quota arrangements due to come into force on 1 July.
Jonathan Clemens, CEO of BCSA, outlined industry concerns regarding the potential impact of the measures on downstream steelwork companies and the wider construction supply chain. Michelle Welsh MP acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and agreed to engage further with parliamentary colleagues and discuss the matter further.
Michelle Welsh MP said: “It was a pleasure to visit Briton Fabricators and meet the team behind a business that has been contributing to major infrastructure projects across the UK for more than 50 years.
“I am proud to have Briton Fabricators based here in the constituency. Their success is a testament to the skill, expertise and hard work of the local workforce, and they make an important contribution to both our local economy and the wider UK construction sector.
“It was valuable to hear directly about the opportunities and challenges facing the constructional steelwork industry and I look forward to continuing discussions with industry representatives and parliamentary colleagues to ensure concerns are properly considered.”
Jonathan Clemens, CEO of BCSA, said: “It was extremely valuable to discuss the challenges currently facing the constructional steelwork sector directly with Michelle during her visit to Briton Fabricators.
“There is considerable concern across the industry regarding the proposed tariff and quota arrangements and the potential impact these measures could have on downstream manufacturers, fabricators and the wider UK supply chain.”
Dean Morcom, managing director of Briton Fabricators, said: “We were delighted to welcome Michelle to Briton Fabricators and showcase the work we are delivering across major infrastructure projects throughout the UK.
“The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss some of the practical and policy challenges currently affecting businesses across the steelwork sector and the wider manufacturing supply chain.”

President's Column May 2026
It has been a busy few months with much going on that could adversely impact our industry and requiring comment from the BCSA. At the same time, we must not forget the ongoing technical issues that impact all our members. For a long time, fire protection has been uppermost in many members’ minds, with intumescent paint systems becoming more expensive than the steelwork they are protecting. In the aftermath of Grenfell and the Luton Airport car park fire, both the required fire resistance periods and the protection systems themselves have come under added scrutiny. Much of the guidance that we are working with dates from the development of BS 5950-8 which in reality, was written a generation ago and probably overdue for some re-examination.
