Four leading steel fabricators from the West Midlands convened recently to tackle pressing challenges facing the industry and explore potential opportunities for growth and collaboration.
The meeting, hosted by Brierley Hill-based Midland Structures Ltd, brought together representatives from Angle Ring Company Ltd, Barnshaw Section Benders Ltd, Hadley Group and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), alongside key figures from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), including Paul Edwards, Head of Economic Delivery and Development, and Alex Toft, Mayoral Advisor.
Key topics on the agenda included cash retentions—a practice where steel contractors often face delayed payments for years until entire construction projects are completed—alongside housing shortages and skills gaps impacting the sector. These pressing issues sparked a constructive dialogue on how the constructional steel industry and policymakers can collaborate for meaningful change.
All participants are members of the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), the UK’s leading trade body for the constructional steelwork industry.
Jonathan Clemens, Chief Executive Officer at the BCSA said: “This meeting underscores the strength of collaboration. By uniting industry leaders and policymakers, we’re creating a path toward solutions that will benefit not just our sector, but the economy as a whole.”
