National Light-Gauge Steelwork Specification (NLSS)

Light-gauge steel frame structures use galvanised cold-formed steel sections as the primary structural components which can be assembled into prefabricated panels. Light gauge steel is an integral part of modular construction because it is strong, lightweight, durable and is becoming a more significant solution for residential buildings.

The introduction of the Building Safety Act has focused the construction industry on competence and capability to ensure that building projects are robust and are designed and constructed to meet the safety of those living and working in residential and office buildings.

Building on this wider context, the BCSA has developed a National Light Gauge Steel Specification (NLSS), with input from industry. It sets out a framework of requirements to reassure designers, clients and contractors that the light gauge steel industry is able to establish and maintain high standards in all areas of its operations.

What does the National Light-Gauge Steelwork Specification (NLSS) cover?

The National Light-Gauge Steelwork Specification seeks to harmonise both the approach, and the terms used in the industry providing transparency that reduces risk. It also aims to improves communication and quality standards; so describes the information to be included in a project specification such as:

  • Materials used
  • Transfer of design information
  • Manufacture
  • Assembly
  • Installation
  • Requirements for protective treatment
  • Quality management

Key dates

As with all National UK Specifications that are launched, a 6-month familiarisation period is given, during which the document can be used voluntarily. This first edition will come into force from April 2025.

Light Steel Framing for New Homes: Insights from the Building Centre Webinar

As part of our collaboration with the Building Centre’s New Homes in New Ways Exhibition, we were pleased to host a webinar on Light Steel Framing for New Homes, presented by Andrew Way from the Steel Construction Institute (SCI).

The insights shared by Andrew Way on 26th November, offered valuable guidance on integrating the National Light-Gauge Steelwork Specification into new housing projects. As light steel framing continues to emerge as an ideal method for multi-storey and multi-occupancy residential buildings, this webinar provided essential knowledge for those involved in both design and construction. The webinar highlighted how the NLSS can be easily integrated into contract documentation, improving communication, reducing risks, and ensuring consistent standards in steel frame construction.

The NLSS, developed by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) in partnership with SCI and Industry Partners, aims to standardise the manufacture and installation of light-gauge steel structures, ensuring high-quality and efficient outcomes for both designers and contractors. The recording can be watched here.
