President's Column July/August 2021
20 Jul 2021
On the 24th June, the BCSA held its AGM in London, I was voted in to serve another year. At times like this it is only natural to reflect on the last year in office, what has worked and what didn't go so well, all in the backdrop of very challenging times. The instabilities caused by BREXIT, the COVID-19 pandemic, large scale price increases, scarcity of supply and the climate emergency have all made the last 12 months interesting to say the least.

The combined effect of a COVID lockdown and a typical British winter and spring have been very trying mentally for all employees. We can all see that creeping into the workplace, as we all seem to suffer with low moods from time to time.

I didn't think anything would topple sustainability and steel section prices off the most talked about issues in the steel construction industry. Well cold rolled deliveries have managed to do it! I know many steelwork contractors are having some very difficult conversations with Tier 1 Contractors in relation to the delivery and price of cold rolled products. Cold rolled suppliers have an excellent track record of servicing steelwork contractors in a just-in-time fashion, but long-term relationships are being tested in the current climate. Where Tier 1 Contractors have won competitive orders with "old" prices and "old" lead-in's, somewhere along the line there are going to be problems. The secondary effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns are now being seen all through the supply chain.

I've been informed by my social media that I've been in this industry for 25 years. During that time, a lot of technological advances have been brought into the industry, all with the aim of making our lives a lot easier. In many ways they have, a lot of the design and detailing programs on the market are superb bits of kit. One of the things that hasn't improved however, is the quality and timeliness of coordinated information that we all have to suffer. During that time, every new...

Brexit and COVID-19 combined were always going to make life very difficult in a heavily saturated market. Although market conditions are still challenging, many can now see a rosier future going forwards. I was listening to a leading economist, Roger Martin-Fagg earlier this week. He was talking about money supply and that, for the most part, many households have more spare cash now than they've ever had. This means that when lockdown restrictions are lifted, people will spend like they've...
